On Saturday, July 6, 2019, I sat down with my laptop and began writing a journal entry, as I’ve been doing consistently, at least once a week, since mid-2003. With only two more full days remaining at the vacation spot of our dreams, I was ready to ask myself big questions, and to renew my search for answers.

One essential takeaway: I felt extremely lucky for all the blessings in my life, all of which build upon my relationship with Beth. My efforts to assess my early career aspirations alongside actual achievements-to-date made me especially aware of the vital importance of maintaining my focus as a communications consultant through the Darnell Works Agency, which was entering its 19th successful year in business. While still being enamored with my youthful dreams of becoming novelist and filmmaker, I saw how I could still eventually pursue them through mindful perseverance in the days to come.
Looking back now, that sober vision of the foundation of my life – alongside more aspirational ideas that continue to inspire me – created an important milestone. We’ve had some more awesome vacations since then, and I’ve learned to take advantage of that idle, happy mindset, to take stock of the present, and lay plans for the future.
