By James E. Turner, M.D. Release Date: Jan. 17, 2019. A riveting account of a draft- and Vietnam-era U.S. Army Medic, by a man who lived it.
There is a character to Dr. Turner’s writing which is immediately engaging, friendly and disarming. For anyone who knows they’re encountering words written by a highly specialized and widely esteemed critical care physician, this candid openness is surprising. Joining him and taking in the funny, sometimes troubling but always uplifting stories of early life, parents, extended family, and early educational experiences is not only enjoyable; knowing a kid can defy expectations and succeed wildly is deeply satisfying.
Being draft-age in the Vietnam era was a living nightmare for a generation of Americans – still, this bright young man escaped with a hell of a story, involving the U.S. Army, the Pentagon, two presidents, MLK, RFK… and then, a higher education requiring one improbable, positive turn of fortune atop another. Cap it off with another miraculous flight to achieve the impossible – all equally well told, from the first to the last – and consider this a spectacular, Joseph Campbell-worthy hero journey. Largely set in the Vietnam era, in Dr. Turner’s hands, these stories will inspire readers and audiences of all ages.
Very well written story of a man who exceeds all expectations that labeled him in his youth. His extreme persistence in pursuing his goals was accomplished by his desire and fortitude to perform over and beyond these expectations. A fascinating insight into his mind as he described the actual thought processes which he had to work through.
